Step-by-step guide using Google Takeout to export your data, protect your privacy, or create a personal backup
Google Takeout is a free tool that lets you download a copy of all the data Google has stored about you—from emails and Drive files to location history and YouTube activity. It’s useful for:
Backing up your files and memories
Reviewing what Google tracks
Switching to another service
Creating a digital archive for peace of mind
Here’s just a sample of what’s available:
âś… Bookmarks and Chrome browsing history
âś… Emails from Gmail
âś… Files and folders from Google Drive
âś… Calendar events and contacts
âś… Google Photos albums
âś… YouTube watch history and comments
âś… Google Maps location timeline
âś… Search history and voice recordings
âś… Google Keep notes and tasks
Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
You’ll see a long list of Google services—each with a checkbox.
By default, everything is selected. You can uncheck anything you don’t want.
Scroll to the bottom and click Next step.
Choose your export settings:
Delivery method: Email link, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box
Frequency: One-time or automatic every 2 months for 1 year
File type & size: ZIP or TGZ, and size limit (2GB, 4GB, etc.)
Click Create export.
Google will begin preparing your data. This may take minutes or hours depending on how much you’ve selected.
You’ll receive an email when your archive is ready to download.
Store your downloaded data in a secure location (external drive or encrypted folder).
Don’t share your archive unless you’ve reviewed what’s inside.
Delete old exports if you no longer need them.
Use this opportunity to review your Google account settings and privacy controls at myaccount.google.com.
You can repeat this process anytime.
Some data (like deleted emails or old location history) may not be included.
If you use multiple Google accounts, you’ll need to export each one separately.
You can open ZIP files using Windows Explorer, Mac Finder, or free tools like 7-Zip.
