How to Spot and Avoid Scams
Protect yourself from online fraud, fake calls, and suspicious messages
Scams are becoming more common—and more convincing. Whether you're using a phone, computer, or tablet, it's important to know how to recognize and avoid them. This guide will help you stay safe and confident.
Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust. Watch out for:
Fake tech support: Pop-ups or calls saying “Your computer is infected”
Phishing emails: Messages that look like your bank or CRA asking for login info
Prize scams: “You’ve won!” messages asking for payment or personal details
Romance scams: Strangers online asking for money or gift cards
Fake delivery texts: Messages claiming a package is waiting, with suspicious links
If you see any of these signs, pause and ask for help:
Urgent language like “Act now!” or “Your account will be closed”
Requests for payment by gift card, wire transfer, or crypto
Links that look strange or don’t match the real website
Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or odd formatting
Caller ID that says “Unknown” or a number you don’t recognize
You can protect yourself with a few simple habits:
Don’t click on links or attachments from unknown senders
Never share passwords, banking info, or SIN over phone or email
Hang up on suspicious calls—real companies won’t pressure you
Use antivirus software and keep your device updated
Ask someone you trust before responding to anything that feels off
If something feels wrong, trust your instincts. You can:
Take a screenshot and ask a family member or friend
